Elephant Circles

Mon Aug 25, 2008, 8:40 AM
  • Mood: Hopeless
  • Reading: some RP's I'm catching up on
  • Watching: Tom & Jerry cartoons, they make me happy
  • Drinking: RC Cola
They used to tell stories of the little elephant in the circus that was always chained by one leg and was made only to go in small circles. It was that way all the way until it's will to even fight it was broken, so that even when her chain broke she still went in little circles.

Lately I've been coloring for my Gaia shop and REALLY wanting to make some new lines from my own art and I find... I can only go in little circles. I stare at a blank canvas on my paint programs and every attempt fizzles out like a sad ghost that can't keep it's form.

Can anyone suggest any inspirational images? I need to break out of this funk before someone finds a new chain for my leg. I'm thinking of practicing with human forms. Maybe I need new music.

I try to either stick with things that I'd like to see (hey, wouldn't it be cool if I could find a shop that sells...)
Or taking a bunch of random critters and mashing them together. Better if you make them pretty obscure.

Or maybe even draw some eyes you like and work from there.

I found the movie Across the Universe to be AMAZINGLY inspirational - it pulled me out of an art funk a while back...

Hm... depends on what you find inspiring... I can get inspired from a good conversation or one of my favorite movies. Maybe break out of the norm a bit? New music, new place to walk, new café, heckling random people for conversations on philosophy... teehee. I've gone to parks and drawn random folks to practice human anatomy sometimes. Cirque du Soleil really inspired some interesting human poses awhile back for me. o.0 Hope this helps! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

It isn't the cards you're dealt that matters, it's how you play them.

Try typing in a random word in google or another search engine then pick say a number and look at the number down from the top. Or find the site listed that used your word more times than the others. Try a color or a part of an animal or person and see what you get.

Yeah I guess it really does depend on where you find inspiration. :) I get a lot of inspiration and ideas from looking at other artists. I don't really listen to music while I work, but I go to hulu.com or veoh.com and get some kind of tv show going in the background where I'm not watching it but I can hear it. Maybe it makes the long hours at the tablet seem shorter? I don't know.

I know I went through a long period recently where I didn't want to do anything. It really is a miserable thing to sit and just not have any motivation. :( I slowly and uncomfortably worked through it over the course of 2 years, I guess.

Not sure if this is exactly what you are looking for. Some art links for you. There are a lot of links from these links too, as a lot of the artists have a links section as well:

Cirque du Soleil is wonderful! We saw Delerium live about two years ago and it was beautiful.

Get a photograph of your nicest memories. Get a picture old like cybershit from all your first doodles you drew years ago :3
